Washington, January 28 (HS): US President Donald Trump has hinted that Microsoft may soon acquire Chinese social media company TikTok. Trump said on Monday that he believes Microsoft is in discussions to acquire TikTok. He told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that its bid would be interesting.
According to CNN news, TikTok is to be banned in the US as per the law. When Trump was directly asked if Microsoft is in discussions to acquire this app? Trump replied to this question, “I would say yes.” He said, “There is a lot of interest in TikTok.” However, Microsoft refused to comment on this.
It is worth noting that TikTok currently has 170 million American users. Trump has already made it clear that if ByteDance wants to run business in America, then it will either have to sell it on the basis of national security. Otherwise it will have to face a ban. After taking over as President on January 20, Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day reprieve.
The US Supreme Court upheld the law banning TikTok on January 18. The Supreme Court, while disposing of TikTok’s petition challenging the provisions of the then Biden administration’s ban law, said that the provisions do not violate any rights. The Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision against TikTok. After this, then newly elected President Donald Trump wrote in a social media post that he would review the situation before taking a decision on TikTok.
