On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC on a two-day visit to hold the high-stakes talks with President Donald Trump. PM Modi will be hosted by the US President Donald Trump in what would be the first bilateral talks between the two leaders following Trump assumed office for a second term. He is staying at the Blair House, the US presidential guest house at the heart of the American capital city.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Blair House, the President’s Guest House, he was accorded a rousing welcome by members of the Indian-American diaspora. The community members gathered at Blair House and welcomed him with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ as they waved the Indian and American flags.
During his two-day visit to the US, PM Modi and Trump will hold bilateral discussions in the White House. They both are expected to meet at 2.35 am (IST) and will address a press briefing at 3.40 am (IST). PM Modi’s high-profile meetings will start with talks with National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, followed by Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), at 10 pm. The PM will also meet Vivek Ramaswamy, who ran for the White House, at 10.45 pm.
Musk’s meeting with PM Modi will be keenly watched following the Tesla CEO cancelled his visit to India last year. Starlink’s plans to start ‘satellite broadband services’ in India and setting up a Tesla factory could be the topics up for discussion. The Modi-Trump meeting comes on the backdrop of the US President’s tariff threats to India and the deportation of 104 illegal Indian immigrants – an issue that led to uproar back home.
