Pope Francis, 88, remains in stable condition as he battles double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for the 17th day. Despite an isolated breathing crisis on Friday, the Vatican reported Saturday that his blood circulation remained stable, and no signs of worsening infection were detected.
In a written message on Sunday, Francis expressed gratitude for the prayers and support, saying he felt “carried” by the faith of his followers. Unable to lead his weekly address for a third consecutive Sunday, he instead met with Vatican officials, Cardinal Pietro Parolin and his deputy.
The pope, who has a history of lung issues, continues to require mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy. While his condition is improving, the prognosis remains guarded. This marks his longest absence from public view since his papacy began in 2013, and it remains unclear how long his hospitalization will continue.
