India has responded to US President Donald Trump’s statement about tariff reductions, saying that this is not an “extraordinary step” but a routine trade decision. A government source said India has made similar tariff agreements with other developed nations like Australia, the UAE, Switzerland, and Norway.
On Friday, Trump claimed that India’s tariffs were “massive” and restrictive, making it difficult for US companies to sell products in India. He also said India had now agreed to reduce tariffs significantly, following pressure from his administration.
In response, the Indian government clarified that ongoing trade discussions with the US are in line with similar agreements made with other countries. These talks focus on increasing market access and deepening supply chain ties.
India and the US had earlier agreed to start discussions on a Bilateral Trade Agreement by autumn. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent visit to Washington also included negotiations on tariff issues.
Officials emphasized that both countries have their interests and concerns in trade discussions. The government source stated India’s approach remains consistent with its trade policies with other global partners.
