Recently in an interview with PTI, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti conveyed a heartfelt commitment to the safety and welfare of Bharatiya students studying in the United States. Speaking at the American Center, Garcetti addressed the concerns sparked by the unfortunate deaths of Bharatiya students in the US, emphasizing the country’s dedication to ensuring their well-being.
“We care deeply for the well-being of Indian students in the US. We want parents to know that when their children are in the United States, they are our children too,” Garcetti expressed to PTI. He shed light on the availability of resources to assist students in various aspects, including mental health support, despite being far away from their homes and families.
Acknowledging the recent tragic incidents involving Bharatiya students, Garcetti affirmed that the US remains a safe country. He stressed the importance of exercising common sense in ensuring public safety, such as being aware of which neighborhoods to avoid and utilizing resources like campus security and local law enforcement.
Reflecting on his own experiences as a student in the 1980s, Garcetti recalled receiving safety guidance despite the lack of modern technology like cell phones. He emphasized the wealth of resources available to students in 2024, underscoring the advancements in ensuring safety on campuses and beyond.
Garcetti highlighted American universities as providing an exceptional environment for students, including those from Bharat, offering enriching experiences. At the American Center, a pre-departure orientation program was organized for Bharatiya students selected for academic programs at various universities, fostering engagement and preparedness.
Encouraging students to maximize their time in the US, Garcetti emphasized the importance of effectively utilizing available resources.
He urged students to heed campus safety instructions and familiarize themselves with their surroundings to ensure a positive experience during their academic journey.
Addressing the recent incidents, including the tragic and shocking deaths of Uma Satya Sai Gadde and Sameer Kamath, Garcetti reiterated the US’s commitment to providing resources for student safety.
He moreover emphasized the need for students to arm themselves with knowledge of available resources and best practices to navigate their academic journey safely.
“While tragic incidents may occur statistically, it’s crucial to equip oneself with knowledge and resources for the best possible experience,” Garcetti stated. He referenced External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s remarks, affirming that there is no evidence of targeting or connection to Bharatiya students.
Garcetti at the end reassured Bharatiya students and their parents of the US’s commitment to their safety and well-being. He emphasize the importance of utilizing available resources and exercising common sense during their time in the country.
