This Day in The History | Birth Anniversary of India’s ‘Radio-Ben’ | Ritam English
On March 25, 1920, Usha Mehta was born in Surat. She played an active role in India's independence movement. During the Quit India Movement, Usha Mehta gained nationwide recognition for operating the underground Congress Radio, contributing significantly to the freedom struggle. Witnessing her family members participating in the fight against the British from a young age inspired her, leading her to join her first protest against a British committee at the age of 8. From participating in civil disobedience movements to boycotting British goods and even cutting cotton to reject British-made items, Usha Mehta was involved in peaceful protests since her childhood. She later stated in an interview, "Even as a little girl, I was satisfied to break the law and do something for my country." Usha Mehta was arrested by the British and remained in Pune jail until March 1946. Due to her poor health, she stayed away from active politics after India gained independence. In 1998, she was honored with India's highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. She passed away on August 11, 2000, at the age of 80. The movie "Ai Watan Mere Watan," starring Sara Ali Khan, released on Amazon Prime on March 21, 2024, is based on the life of Usha Mehta and Congress Radio. Sara Ali Khan portrayed the character of Usha Mehta in the film.
