The CBI has revealed about the irregularities going on for the last three years in the appointment of house staff at Kolkata-based R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The central investigating agency claims that evidence of corruption has been found in the recruitment of 84 doctors and house staff. In 2024, a 13-member committee was formed for the appointment of house staff, in which signatures of all the members were required after the interview. However, the final signature was done by Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar and the main accused in the corruption case.
The CBI has told the court that after the interview of the house staff in 2022 and 2023, the signatures of other members of the committee were canceled and Sandeep Ghosh used to prepare the list by appointing house staff according to his preferences. However, corruption worth crores of rupees is suspected behind this process. Apart from ‘Ma Tara Traders’, the company of Biplab Singh, a businessman close to Sandeep Ghosh, the CBI has also detected two other companies named ‘Baba Loknath’ and ‘Tiyasa Enterprise’.
According to preliminary investigation, these companies were involved in the tender process. During the tender process, Sandeep Ghosh set the bid as per his wish and gave the tenders to Biplab’s companies only. Some officials of RG Tax were aware of the tender, but no one was given the documents. Sandeep Ghosh used to hand over the documents to these officials only at the time of collecting money from Biplab.
Similarly, medical equipment as well as sofa sets and refrigerators were also purchased through the company of Suman Hazra, another vendor close to Sandeep Ghosh. Apart from this, a cafe was opened in the hospital in the name of the wife of security guard Afsar Ali, which was run by Afsar himself. CBI has so far arrested Biplab, Suman, and Afsar Ali along with Sandeep Ghosh and further investigation of the case is going on.
