US President Donald Trump praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, saying they were good friends and he hoped that talks on tariffs between the two countries would go well.
Trump spoke to reporters at the White House, saying, “Prime Minister Modi was here recently, and we’ve always been very good friends. India is one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world. They’re very smart.”
He added, “Modi is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We had very good talks. I think everything will work out well between India and the US. And I want to say, you have a great prime minister.”
Earlier this week, PM Modi was asked about his relationship with Trump. He talked about a memorable moment at the ‘Howdy Modi’ rally during Trump’s first term. At the rally, Trump ignored security rules and took a walk around the stadium with Modi. Modi said he was touched by Trump’s courage and trust in him, especially after Trump faced an assassination attempt during his presidential campaign.
This month, Trump said in an interview that he believed India would lower tariffs on American goods. He also mentioned that the US would apply the same tariffs India charges them starting on April 2. Trump had previously said that India’s high tariffs were “unfair” and hoped that India would reduce them.
