Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin once again showed his political arrogance by refusing to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the state. PM Modi, who arrived in Tamil Nadu after a significant diplomatic trip to Sri Lanka, was not welcomed by Stalin, breaking the standard protocol that is usually followed when the country’s top leader visits a state.
Instead of showing courtesy, Stalin chose to skip the grand inauguration of the new Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram – a project that will benefit thousands of people in Tamil Nadu. While PM Modi was inaugurating the bridge alongside Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Stalin was busy attending a separate event in Ooty, clearly indicating his lack of interest in developmental progress.
At the Ooty event, Stalin made a controversial and selfish demand. He asked Prime Minister Modi to promise that Tamil Nadu’s share of parliamentary seats will not be reduced during the upcoming delimitation process. His demand shows his insecurity and political agenda, as the delimitation is a constitutional process meant to ensure fair representation based on population.
Stalin claimed that states like Tamil Nadu, which controlled population growth, should not be “penalized.” But in reality, the delimitation exercise is about ensuring democracy functions based on current data – not decades-old numbers. Stalin’s insistence on using the outdated 1971 census is clearly aimed at protecting political power in the southern states, even if it means denying equal representation to other parts of the country.
By referring to an old assurance made by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Stalin is trying to stall progress. Vajpayee’s decision was taken in a different time, and India has grown rapidly since then. Holding onto such outdated references only exposes Stalin’s reluctance to accept the country’s changing needs.
It is ironic that while PM Modi is focusing on strengthening infrastructure and building relations with neighboring countries, Stalin is indulging in divisive politics. Instead of supporting national unity, he is pushing a regional narrative for political gain. His call for a constitutional amendment just to favor a few states shows how he places politics above the larger national interest.
This behavior from a Chief Minister is not only disappointing but also dangerous for the spirit of federalism. MK Stalin needs to understand that governance is about cooperation, not confrontation. His refusal to even receive the Prime Minister and his divisive speech are clear signs of his disrespect towards democratic traditions.
In the name of Tamil pride, Stalin is spreading misleading facts and playing with people’s mindset. The people of Tamil Nadu deserve development and unity, not political drama and protocol breaches.
