CM Rekha Gupta Expands Ayushman Coverage to Widows and Persons with Disabilities, 5.5 Lakh Families to Benefit

CM Rekha Gupta has extended the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Yojana to widows and persons with disabilities in Delhi, bringing an additional 5.5 lakh families under the ambit of free health insurance coverage of up to ten lakh rupees annually. The decision, approved by the Delhi Cabinet under her leadership, is aimed at strengthening financial protection for vulnerable groups and ensuring equitable access to quality medical treatment across the capital.

With this move, nearly 3.96 lakh women receiving widow pension and about 1.31 lakh beneficiaries under disability pension schemes will now be eligible for treatment under the Ayushman framework. The inclusion is expected to significantly reduce out of pocket healthcare expenses for these sections, enabling them to access both government and empanelled private hospitals without financial stress.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the decision is designed to bring meaningful change in the lives of economically weaker households by ensuring access to advanced healthcare services without cost barriers. The expanded coverage builds upon the existing beneficiary base in Delhi, which already includes families under Antyodaya and priority household categories, frontline workers such as ASHA and anganwadi staff, as well as senior citizens above the age of seventy through dedicated support programs.

According to official data, over 7.23 lakh Ayushman cards have already been issued in Delhi, including more than 2.74 lakh cards for senior citizens. Additionally, over 29,000 beneficiaries have availed treatment under the scheme so far. The healthcare network supporting the initiative includes more than 200 empanelled hospitals across the city, comprising both public and private institutions, ensuring widespread accessibility and service availability.

The expansion reflects a broader commitment by the administration to strengthen the healthcare safety net and improve inclusivity in welfare delivery. By integrating more vulnerable groups into the health insurance system, the government aims to reduce disparities in healthcare access and promote a more resilient public health framework.

This initiative highlights a governance approach focused on targeted welfare, efficient implementation and social security. With expanded eligibility and a growing healthcare network, the Rekha Gupta government is working toward ensuring that quality healthcare becomes accessible, affordable and reliable for every eligible resident in Delhi.
