CM Rekha Gupta Expands Community Healthcare Access with Lions Eye Centre Launch in Shalimar Bagh
CM Rekha Gupta inaugurated a Lions Eye Centre in Shalimar Bagh to improve access to specialized eye care, especially for weaker sections.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta strengthened her government’s focus on accessible and inclusive healthcare by inaugurating a Lions Eye Centre in Shalimar Bagh, reinforcing a broader push to bring quality medical services closer to communities. The new facility is expected to play a crucial role in delivering specialized eye care, particularly benefiting economically weaker sections.
The initiative aligns with the Rekha Gupta government’s larger healthcare vision that combines infrastructure expansion, affordable treatment, and preventive care, supported by a significant allocation of ₹12,645 crore in the 2026 to 27 budget for the health sector.
At the inauguration, the Chief Minister appreciated Lions Clubs International for its contribution to public welfare, highlighting that such collaborations are essential for strengthening grassroots healthcare delivery. She noted that the eye centre will ensure timely diagnosis and treatment of vision related issues, reducing dependency on distant hospitals and improving overall health outcomes in the area.
CM Gupta also reflected on the government’s achievements in the health sector over the past year, emphasizing a consistent effort to build a robust and inclusive healthcare ecosystem. One of the key milestones has been the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi, which provides eligible beneficiaries with health insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh annually. So far, over 7.23 lakh Ayushman cards have been issued, and more than 29,000 beneficiaries have already received treatment under the scheme.
Special attention has also been given to senior citizens through the Ayushman Vay Vandana initiative, ensuring that individuals above the age of 70 receive comprehensive health coverage. In addition, Jan Aushadhi centres have been established across government hospitals, making affordable generic medicines accessible to the public.
The government has also expanded primary healthcare services by setting up more than 370 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across Delhi. These centres offer free diagnostic tests, medicines, cancer screening, vaccination, and maternal and child healthcare services. With a target of establishing 1,100 such centres, the administration aims to ensure that quality healthcare is available within close proximity of every household.
The inauguration of the Lions Eye Centre reflects a continued emphasis on decentralizing healthcare access and improving service delivery. Under CM Rekha Gupta’s leadership, Delhi’s healthcare strategy is steadily moving toward a model that prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and comprehensive care for all sections of society.
