Three Terrorists Killed As Encounter Breaks In Jammu & Kashmir’s Shopian

Three terrorists were killed in a fight with security forces in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir. One more terrorist might still be hiding in the area. The fight first started in Kulgam, but the terrorists then moved into a forest area in Shopian. The Army and paramilitary forces have been fighting the terrorists for about two hours.
The security forces found the terrorists after getting a tip-off from intelligence sources. The operation is still going on. The Indian Army posted on X, “On 13 May 2025, based on specific intelligence of a Rashtriyas Rifles Unit, about presence of terrorists in general area Shoekal Keller, Shopian, Indian Army launched a search and destroy Operation. During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in elimination of three hardcore terrorists. Operation is in in progress.”
In response, the forces fired back, and it turned into a gunfight. Based on information that some terrorists might be hiding in the Shukroo Keller area of South Kashmir, the security forces started a search operation there. They surrounded the area to look for the terrorists.
They added, “The firing is still going on”. So far, no one has been reported hurt or killed on either side. Just five days after Operation Sindoor, a fresh encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday (May 13), officials said.
The encounter started in the Shukroo Keller area of South Kashmir after security forces received specific information that some terrorists were hiding there. The forces quickly launched a cordon and search operation, surrounding the area to find the terrorists. During the search, the terrorists opened fire, and the security forces fired back. The exchange of gunfire is still going on, and so far, no injuries or deaths have been reported on either side.
This is the first encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in the last 11 days. It comes at an important time, right after Operation Sindoor, India’s strong military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 innocent people were killed.
On May 7, India launched airstrikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), clearly stating that only terrorist locations were targeted. In response, Pakistan carried out heavy shelling, which killed civilians, and also launched drones and missiles at Indian civilian areas. Most of these were intercepted by India’s air defence systems.
India then struck back, hitting Pakistan’s military bases, including important airbases, and caused serious damage. On May 10, both countries announced a ceasefire, but India has made it clear that it will keep a close watch on Pakistan, and any wrong move will lead to strong action.
Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the countrymen on Monday and praised the Indian armed forces for their bravery during Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched by India. PM Modi’s address came just a few days after India and Pakistan agreed to stop all military actions on land, in the air, and at sea. The agreement to cease fire came after India carried out Operation Sindoor as a response to the terror attack in Pahalgam.
