In May 1857, the flames of the First War of Independence, which had begun in Meerut, reached Rewari in present-day Haryana within just a few days. It was then that a brave warrior from the soil of Rewari openly challenged the British and changed both history and geography through his courage and leadership. Rather than bowing before the British, the young revolutionary raised a formidable army and sounded the bugle of resistance against them. His name was Rao Tula Ram Singh Yadav. Within a matter of days, he overthrew British rule from the State of Rewari, located southwest of Delhi, and established Indian rule over the entire region. Through his struggle, Rao Tula Ram proved as early as 1857 that the brutal British regime could be challenged through determination and unwavering devotion to the motherland. His struggle did not remain confined to Rewari alone; it became an inspiring chapter in the history of the 1857 Revolution, and its story is truly remarkable.

Rao Tula Ram Singh Yadav's resentment towards the British did not arise suddenly. Behind it lay years of humiliation and injustice. His ancestors had fought alongside the Marathas against the British, after which the British confiscated the family's jagirs (landed estates). This humiliation continued to burn within him for years. When the flames of the First War of Independence erupted in Meerut in May 1857, and the news reached Rewari, Rao Tula Ram Singh saw it as the perfect opportunity to challenge British rule. He organised his trusted companions and resolved to overthrow British authority. His deep desire for freedom prepared him for a decisive struggle.

On 17 May 1857, Rao Tula Ram Singh, accompanied by nearly 500 armed and trusted companions, marched directly to the Rewari Tehsil Headquarters. There, after fighting the British soldiers, they drove them out and recaptured the government buildings. Within just a few hours of fighting, Rewari was liberated from British rule. Afterwards, he established his headquarters at the fortified village of Rampura, situated about one mile from Rewari, and assumed power as its ruler. This was not merely the capture of a territory by Rao Tula Ram Singh Yadav—it was an open challenge to British authority. His success further strengthened the spirit of independence in the surrounding regions and inspired people with renewed enthusiasm to fight against the British.

After capturing Rewari, Rao Tula Ram Singh did not remain confined to governing from his fort. He knew that the British would not accept defeat so easily. Therefore, his priority was to strengthen his military power. For this purpose, he established a Revenue Department and appealed to the people to contribute through taxes and voluntary donations. The public responded with wholehearted support. Using the funds collected, Rao Tula Ram raised a 5,000-men-strong army. He trained his soldiers to confront the British under every possible circumstance. Raising such a large army despite limited resources was a remarkable demonstration of his leadership and organisational abilities.

Along with strengthening his military, Rao Tula Ram Singh established a large workshop inside the Rampura Fort, where cannons, gun carriages, and ammunition were manufactured. At that time, such organised production of weapons by a local ruler was an extraordinary achievement in itself. In addition, he strictly enforced law and order so that the people of Rewari remained united and no disorder could arise. As a result of these efforts, within a few months this small region had become a formidable rebel stronghold for the British. Rewari was no longer merely a princely state—it had become one of the strongest centres of the 1857 Revolution.

Today, whenever the history of India's First War of Independence is remembered, Rao Tula Ram Singh Yadav is honoured as a self-respecting and courageous revolutionary. Despite limited resources, he openly challenged the British Empire, established his authority over Rewari, and governed it independently. He raised an army of thousands of soldiers, organised the manufacture of weapons, and transformed the entire region into a powerful centre of the 1857 Uprising. His leadership stands as proof that every courageous step taken in defence of the motherland has the power to change the course of history. That is why the name of Rao Tula Ram Singh Yadav continues to be remembered with great respect among the immortal heroes of India's freedom struggle.
