Gujarat Government Grants Citizenship To 56 Pakistani Hindus Under CAA

During the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 56 Pakistani nationals who have been residing in Gujarat for the past two decades were officially granted Indian citizenship. The citizenship certificates were ceremonially handed over by Gujarat’s State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi during an event held in Ahmedabad on December 11.

Congratulating the recipients, Sanghavi expressed his warm wishes, stating, “Smile, now you are citizens of this great country, India.” His words marked a moment of emotional relief and celebration for the new citizens, many of whom had been awaiting this recognition for years.

Among the 56 individuals was a standout case, that of Hisha Kumari. Born in Pakistan in 1998, Hisha relocated to India with her family in 2013, seeking a better future and freedom from persecution. Her journey exemplifies perseverance and determination. After continuing her education in India beyond the 8th grade, Hisha gained admission to a medical college in Ajmer in 2017, showcasing her academic potential. She recently completed her medical studies and is now poised to embark on her professional career as a doctor.

Upon receiving her citizenship, an elated Hisha shared her gratitude. “I am grateful to the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for restoring my identity. After getting this citizenship, I can apply anywhere,” she said, proudly displaying her citizenship certificate. Highlighting the government’s dedication to resolving such cases efficiently, State Home Minister Sanghavi emphasised the streamlined processes that have been introduced.

“Earlier, these individuals had to go through a long and arduous process in Delhi. Now, we have ensured their issues are resolved at the local level,” he explained. The event also brought attention to the Modi government’s continued efforts to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries under the CAA.

From 2017 to March 2024, a total of 1,167 Pakistani citizens have received Indian citizenship. With the inclusion of these 56 individuals, the number has now risen to 1,222.
