CDS: Pakistan’s Proxy War and Ladakh Dispute Top Security Threats

On Thursday, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan highlighted some of the most pressing security issues India is currently facing. Speaking at Ammo India 2024, a conference organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chauhan focused on two significant challenges: the ongoing proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir and the prolonged border dispute with China in eastern Ladakh.
Chauhan noted that the proxy war instigated by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir has recently intensified, extending even to areas south of the Pir Panjal range. At the same time, the border conflict with China remains a major concern for India. These two issues, according to Chauhan, are among the top security threats currently confronting the nation.
In addition to these specific conflicts, Chauhan pointed out that instability in the broader region is also a cause for concern. He emphasized the importance of a strong military and a robust defense industry to address these challenges effectively.
He underscored that for a large and diverse country like India, relying on imports for defense needs is not a sustainable option. With the global security environment being highly dynamic, Chauhan stressed that India must focus on self-reliance and indigenization in its defense sector. This means that India needs to have complete control over the entire lifecycle of defense products- from design and development to manufacturing and maintenance.
Chauhan also highlighted the current state of global conflicts and their impact on the defense industry. He pointed out that the world is experiencing one of the most violent periods since World War II, which has disrupted defense supply chains worldwide.
As countries face shortages in military supplies, the reliance on imports has increased, demonstrating a global interdependence in defense resources.
However, these disruptions present an opportunity for India’s defense sector. Chauhan noted that the Indian defense industry has the chance to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and shift from being a major importer of military hardware to becoming an exporter. By capitalizing on this opportunity, India can strengthen its position in the global defense market and reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers.
