Bharatiya Siblings Shine at Toronto Chess Tournament Kickoff: Historic Duo Grabs Attention

A major international chess tournament kicked off in Toronto with a groundbreaking twist – it’s the first time siblings are competing together. Teen Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R and his sister Vaishali Rameshbabu are making history, with Praggnanandhaa in the Open section and Vaishali in the Women’s category.

The event, known as the 2024 Candidates Tournament, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), was officially inaugurated by former world champion Vishwanathan Anand, now serving as FIDE deputy president. This tournament is highly regarded as it determines contenders for the World Champion title in both Open and Women’s categories.

Accompanying Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali is their mother, R Nagalakshmi, who has been a constant presence in their chess journey. Vaishali expressed gratitude for the familial support, noting the comfort it brings during such a high-stakes event.

Vaishali revealed that she often discusses the game with her brother and they enjoy playing against each other for leisure. Their shared passion for chess strengthens their bond and enhances their skills.

Initially facing a potential relocation to Spain due to visa issues, the tournament found its home in Canada after resolving the immigration hurdles. Anand expressed delight at the resolution and emphasized the significance of Indian players’ participation in the event.

Joining Praggnanandhaa in the Open category are Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Gukesh D, while Vaishali Rameshbabu and Koneru Humpy represent Bharat in the Women’s section, contributing to the country’s strong presence.

The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed figures in the chess world, including FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky and Chess Federation of Canada President Vladimir Drkulec. Drkulec highlighted the extensive efforts undertaken to overcome visa challenges, underscoring the excitement surrounding the tournament’s commencement.
