Former HM Chidambaram Exposes Sonia Gandhi-led UPA Govt, FIR Details in Karur Stampede Case and More: Top News of Day

Leh Apex Body (LAB) to boycott talks with Centre scheduled for Oct 6, demanding judicial probe into Sep 24 firing that killed 4 and injured 90.
LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) who led the Ladakh statehood agitation that turned violent last week, sought an apology from the Centre alleging that it called protesters “anti-national” and pro-Pakistan.
KDA has also demanded unconditional release of Wangchuk and others detained after Leh violence.
Gitanjali J. Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, also denied claims linking her husband to Pakistan or violence. While the violent protest resulted in four deaths, she described his protests as peaceful and blamed the escalation on CRPF firing. Furthering a false equivalence between the diplomatic visit of a state head and a meeting between two activists currently embroiled in anti-India controversies, Angmo posed a rhetorical question: ‘If it’s okay for the Hon. PM to meet Md Yunus, why is it a problem when @Wangchuk66, India’s educator and innovator, meets him?’

Families of victims said Sitharaman urged them to stay strong, promised to relay their grief to the Prime Minister, and advised them to seek help from local BJP leaders.
The stampede occurred due to overcrowding at the rally, resulting in 41 deaths, including 18 women, 13 men, and 10 children from Karur and neighboring districts.
Political controversy has erupted with Vijay’s camp alleging conspiracy and calling for a CBI probe, while opposition parties blame the state government and event organizers for poor safety.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each deceased family; the Centre provided ₹2 lakh under PMNRF, and Vijay pledged ₹20 lakh per family and ₹2 lakh for injured persons.
‘I Was Personally in Favour of Military Retaliation After Mumbai 26/11 Terror Attack’: Former HM Chidambaram Reveals Sonia Gandhi-Led Congress Govt Surrendered to US Pressure
Former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who took charge of the Ministry shortly after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, revealed that he was personally in favor of military retaliation against Pakistan. However, the decision for a kinetic response was overruled by the Congress-led government under Sonia Gandhi under the ‘influence’ of MEA and IFS.
In an exclusive interview with journalist Megha Prasad on her show ‘Inside Out’, Chidambaram recalled how then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had asked him to assume the Home Ministry role the day after the last Pakistani terrorist was neutralized. Despite his reservations about the Cabinet reshuffle, Chidambaram agreed, after PM Singh told him that the decision had been made at Sonia Gandhi’s direction. The former Home Minister also stated that he assumed charge “reluctantly” on December 1, 2008.
Chidambaram further revealed that he had discussed military retaliation with PM Singh and senior officials, advocating for a strike in response to the terror attack that killed 166 Indians. However, the government opted for diplomatic solutions, influenced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and intense international pressure, including a personal plea from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urging India not to retaliate.
Chidambaram, however, argued that the government wasn’t “soft on terror,” but the prevailing diplomatic strategy took precedence over his personal stance on military action.

TVK Chief Vijay Joseph’s Delayed Arrival, Roadshow Held Without Permission: Key Details In Karur Stampede FIR
An FIR has been registered following the deadly stampede at Tamil Nadu’s Karur during actor-turned-politician Vijay Joseph’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign rally, which resulted in 41 deaths.
The rally was permitted for a gathering of 10,000 people with 11 conditions imposed, including deployment of 500 police personnel for safety and traffic management; however, the crowd swelled to over 25,000 after media announcements said Vijay would arrive by noon.
Vijay reached Velayudhampalayam, the district border, around 4:45 pm but delayed his movement and conducted an unauthorized roadshow, arriving at Veluchamipuram only by 7 pm, causing major issues in crowd management.
Police repeatedly warned senior TVK leaders—District Secretary Mathiyazhagan, State General Secretary Bushi Anand, and State Joint Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar—about the growing risks of suffocation and injury in the jammed crowd, but these warnings were ignored.
The FIR has booked the three senior party officials under Sections 105, 110, 125(b), and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, along with Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Property Act, citing negligence and violation of conditions.
Despite police support, TVK leaders failed to effectively manage the crowd, which grew uncontrollably as people climbed trees and makeshift roadside shelters that collapsed, causing suffocation and injuries.
The report alleges Vijay’s entry was deliberately delayed by about four hours to create the impression of a larger crowd and make a political statement, forcing thousands to wait under the sun, leading to exhaustion and fatalities.
The FIR states that 11 people died immediately due to suffocation and heat exhaustion during the stampede, with several others hospitalized in critical condition as a direct result of crowd mismanagement and the prolonged event delay.
